Contemporary and Freeform Gallery

The Poole pottery on this page dates from the mid 1950’s.  The shapes were designed by Alfred Read and Guy Sydenham.  The irregular “Freeform” shapes were slip-cast in moulds, and the symmetrical vases were hand thrown.   These are all hand painted in the “Contemporary” patterns, the majority of which shown here were designed by Ruth Pavely, the rest (YFC, PRB, OK, OS and OV) by Alfred Read.  What I love so much about these pots, apart from the fantastic 1950's style, is that they're usually in such great condition.  Unlike the earlier pots which invariably have (lovely) crazing, it's rare to find one of these crazed.  Although over 50 years old, they look like they were made yesterday.

Wallpaper

The Contemporary designs show here are reminiscent of, and some were inspired by, the fabric designs and even wallpapers of the time.  All part  the 1950's "new look".  So, in recognition of these pots roots, the link above will take you to a page of Poole designs to download as wallpaper for your desktop.  And, if anyone's handy with a sewing machine, they'd also make for smashing curtains.
